Susan’s vocal performances profile the great history of story and song.  From gospel choir to major choral works, from the roots to the new shoots of jazz, from singing along to leading the band, Susan has crafted her deep repertoire and vocal approach with time and attention.

Susan performs regularly in her hometown of Portland, Oregon.  She shares the jazz scene bandstand at sessions, public gigs and private events.  Her first album appearance is on the 2007 release Hat’s Off by Pete Petersen’s big band, Pork Pie. An ongoing member of the Jonathan Griffith Singers, she has performed three concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York City: Eric Funk’s Pamelia, Karl Jenkin’s, The Armed Man and Handel’s Messiah.  Susan is a founding member and vocalist for Jazz De Novo, a well-crafted 7-piece ensemble performing tight arrangements of swing, ballad and Be Bop tunes.  Versatile Jazz De Novo has the repertoire and virtuosity to perform in any combination from duo to septet.

Susan’s musical training began in gospel choir singing by call and response.  She was accepted to the Marylhurst’s Concert Chorale while also pursuing jazz proficiency and co-founding the folk-based group, The Elf Kings. She promoted and managed the Bobby McFerrin based workshops, “Journey Into the Joys of Making Sound” for her vocal coach, Suzie Stern-Luna. She also took vocal instruction from Tom Blaylock, Mark Bosnian.  Susan’s years of choral experience extended to developing the “Music Mastery Series”, with Dr. Jonathan Griffith, presented in three parts to develop skills of sight singing, ear training and vocal technique in the choral singer.

Susan’s pursuit of musical excellence continues with class study at Clackamas Community College and  Portland State University.  Online master classes, business development and coaching with JazzVoice.com have provided community, support and access to lessons with the top singers across the globe including Sheila Jordan, Cyrille Aimee, Alexis Cole, Tierney Sutton, Duchess, Sara Gazarek, and Karrin Allyson.  Annual participation in the Centrum Jazz Workshops in Port Townsend, Washington provides direct work with distinguished faculty curated by bassist, John Clayton and drummer, Jeff Hamilton.  Susan’s vocal teachers at Port Townsend include Rene’ Marie, Gillian Margot, Michael Mayo, and Sara Gazarek.
